REC response to new provisions of Equality Act
The REC has responded to changes to the Equality Act introduced by the coalition Government. The Act encourages employers to take on more women, minority groups and people with disabilities which are all currently under-represented in many workforces.
The Government said it was to boost voluntary positive action when an employer is faced with two or more candidates of equal merit.
Commenting on the new provisions of the Act, Sarah Gordon, Associate Director of the Sammons Group and Chair of the RECs Diversity and Inclusion Forum, said:
"Professional recruiters are already playing a central role in helping employers to review current recruitment procedures and attract a more diverse pool of candidates. Recent changes may have blurred the lines between positive action and positive discrimination but we are starting to move beyond good intentions and empty rhetoric in order to address under-representation and work-place imbalances.
