Equality laws may cause confusion, lawyer warns

The Equality Act 2010, which come into force and may cause widespread confusion among employers, according to a Scots employment lawyer.

Kate Hodgkiss, employment partner with DLA Piper in Scotland, said she feared businesses had not been given sufficient time to prepare for the introduction of the new laws, which impose strict new requirements on employers.

The Equality Act will rationalise longstanding regulations and place new responsibilities on employers. However, detailed guidance on how the old laws will be phased out and the new rules introduced was only issued last week, giving employers just 10 days to ensure their policies are legally compliant.
