Will the Equality Act make everyone equal before the law? Wait for May 6 . . .
The passage of the Equality Act last week, which comes into effect in October, marks the culmination of 40-odd years of progressive legislation to create fairness between groups.
Having started with race and gender, our society�s thinking about fairness under the law has expanded to include sexual orientation, religion and belief, disability, caring responsibilities and age. Whether this left any room for the individual�s own personal identity is maybe a matter for philosophical debate. But the result was nine important pieces of discrimination legislation and more than 2,500 pages of guidance and statutory codes of practice.
