Equality Bill all at sea say shipping firms
In its latest newsletter, the Chamber said that this was "make or break time" for the future of British shipping.
Up to now, operators of ships registered in the UK have benefited from a provision that enables them to employ seafarers recruited abroad at rates of pay based on the cost of living in their countries of domicile.
This provision is under threat from the Equality Act 2010 (Application of Part 5 to Seafarers) Regulations, which, unless changed, would require any seafarer to be paid at the rate that a UK resident seafarer would expect to earn, irrespective of the costs of living in his or her country of domicile.
