Only one in three understand what the gender pay gap is

Almost two-thirds of the British public incorrectly identified what the gender pay gap is and confused it with the issue of unequal pay, a YouGov survey has found.

Asked whether they thought the gender pay gap was “women as a whole being paid less on average than men as a whole” or “women being paid less than men for doing the same job”, only 30% of 1,640 adults correctly identified the former definition, while 64% chose the latter.

Despite 83% claiming they understood the gender pay gap “very well” or “quite well”, only 33% who answered “very well” knew the right answer, as did 31% who thought they understood “quite well”.
