Belief in public service protected by Equality Act

An employee who became the mayor of Liverpool was covered by discrimination laws

In the case Anderson v Chesterfield High School, an employment tribunal had to decide whether a commitment to public service was a protected belief and whether it played a part in an employee's dismissal.

Law

The Equality Act 2010 (section10) provides protection against unlawful acts on grounds of religion or belief - 'belief' is defined as any religious or philosophical belief, or lack of a belief. Employment tribunals have to decide whether a particular belief comes within the statutory definition and, in doing so, have to apply a five-point test laid out by the EAT in the case Grainger v Nicholson.
