Recruitment, Selection and Promotion
It is good equal opportunities practice to set up a recruitment panel, which will deal with each aspect of the recruitment process from advertising, short listing and interviewing through to selection.
• The recruitment panel should be comprised of people who are trained in equal opportunities as well as recruitment procedures.
• All advertising should state that the company is an equal opportunities employer to ensure that a diverse mixture of people apply for jobs. Jobs should be advertised widely targeting groups mentioned in the Equal Opportunities Policy. One way of doing this is to advertise in newspapers and magazines relevant to the groups mentioned in the policy.
• Organisations which do not explicitly state their position on lesbian and gay issues may discourage applicants from including important relevant information on their application forms. For example, work experience with lesbian and gay organisations may not be disclosed.
• It is unfair to make people feel insecure about revealing such experiences in the application form which may occur if the recruitment staff have not had rigorous equal opportunities training.
• References and records should be treated with caution and discretion
