AIRS
AIRS is part of Gateshead Council's library service. We provide a free of charge talking newspaper and audio magazine service for Gateshead residents who cannot access standard print (available on modest subscription outside Gateshead) and earlier this year were awarded the RNIB's Simply the Best 2004 Accessible Information award for our Braille, large print and audio transcription services and other services we offer visually impaired people, such as the talking newspaper and our visually impaired readers' groups.
We also offer a range of services for Deaf people, including an extensive collection of Deaf Resources (BSL videos, books, leaflets and information) in our Central Library, family history sessions for Deaf people, Internet and Word training in BSL for Deaf people, and hope to start storytelling sessions in BSL for Deaf children and their families shortly.
